Food halls in America date as far back as the eighteenth century, when Faneuil Hall was first introduced in Boston. Since then, of course, upscale food courts have spread across the United States, hunkering down in every major metropolis except Miami— but that’s all about to change.
In recent years, Miami has become a target for a flood of upscale food courts washing onto the city’s primary areas and hubs— a good example of this is La Centrale at Brickell City Centre. But not all food halls are the same. Time Out, as in the renowned guidebook, blog and magazine by the same name, will open its first U.S. food hall concept on Lincoln Road, Miami Beach.
In 2018, Time Out Miami’s very own Time Out Market will debut at 1601 Drexel Avenue in Miami Beach—the first in the U.S. and second of its kind, with Lisbon being the other location.
“Time Out Market Miami is where you’ll go to taste food from the city’s best restaurants and top chefs, sip cocktails by award-winning mixologists and see stunning works of art by Miami’s rising talents,” according to Time Out Miami, the blog. “It’s going to be a mind-blowing showcase of the city, and we can’t wait for you to see it.”
The 17,474-square-foot space will seat 320 inside, 120 outside and feature 17 restaurants from ceviche and pizza to salad, tacos, Asian, Cuban and burgers. There will also be three bars, a demo kitchen and a space dedicated to local art exhibitions.
“Time Out Market brings the best of the city together under one roof: its best restaurants, bars and cultural experiences – wholly based on editorial curation,” Time Out Market CEO Didier Souillat told the press. ““Our passion is to make high-quality fine dining affordable and accessible for all and a close connection with the city is at the heart of Time Out Market. Our first market in Lisbon – loved by locals and visitors alike – has been a major success story since it opened in 2014, so rolling out Time Out Market in great culinary and cultural cities around the world is a priority for us. Miami has a vibrant, diverse and thriving food and cultural scene – this really is a great city for us.”
When the food hall opens in 2018, the average meal per person, including a non-alcoholic beverage drink, will cost around $20. And there will be an all-star list of chefs creating these affordable, fine dining meals.
Details on which chefs will be involved when the food hall opens will be announced at 10 a.m. on October 3.
